A display fridge that sits at 8 or 10 degrees instead of below 5 is more than an annoyance. It puts stock at risk, worries environmental health officers and usually means the unit is working harder and costing more to run. The good news is that many causes are simple, and you can rule out several of them yourself before calling an engineer.
Do not rely on the built-in display alone. Controllers can drift or fail, so put a separate thermometer or a probe in a glass of water on the middle shelf and check it after a couple of hours. Chilled food in the UK should legally be held at 8 degrees or below, and most operators aim for 1 to 5 degrees to give themselves a safety margin.
It also matters where the warmth is. If only the top shelf of a multideck is warm, that points to airflow or loading problems. If the whole cabinet is warm, the cause is more likely the condenser, the refrigerant charge or the compressor itself.

Most warm-fridge callouts are preventable. Clean the condenser regularly, keep the area around the unit ventilated with at least the clearance stated on the data plate, and never load warm product straight into a display cabinet, as it can take hours to pull the whole cabinet back down to temperature.
Keep a simple daily temperature log as well. It satisfies your food safety records and, just as usefully, shows you a gradual decline early, when a repair is cheap, rather than on a hot Saturday afternoon when the cabinet finally gives up with a full load of stock in it.
