A display fridge drifting up to 8C or 10C is more than an inconvenience; in a shop or cafe it puts your stock and your food safety records at risk. Most warm-running problems come down to a handful of causes, and several you can check yourself before calling anyone out.
Open multideck and serve-over fridges rely on a curtain of cold air, and that curtain is easily broken. Overstacking above the load line, blocking the rear air ducts or letting product sit against the back panel stops cold air circulating and leaves the top shelves noticeably warmer than the bottom.
Location matters too. A cabinet pushed too close to a wall, sat in direct sun through a shop window, or parked near an oven or radiator will struggle to hold temperature, especially through a warm Rotherham summer afternoon.
This is the single most common cause we see. The condenser coil, usually behind a grille at the base or rear, pulls in dust, flour, grease and fluff. Once it is caked, the fridge cannot reject heat and the compressor runs constantly while the cabinet slowly warms up.
In a busy bakery or takeaway the coil can clog within a few months. Switch off, find the grille, and vacuum or brush the fins clean. A clean condenser can drop cabinet temperature by several degrees on its own and cut your running costs at the same time.
A thick build-up of ice on the evaporator, at the back inside the cabinet, means the automatic defrost is not clearing properly, often a failed defrost heater, timer or sensor. The ice insulates the coil so the fridge cannot pull heat out of the air.
Worn or split door gaskets let warm air leak in continuously. Run your hand around the seal for draughts, and check the door actually closes on its own. Propping display doors open during a rush undoes the cooling faster than most people expect.
If airflow is clear, the condenser is clean and the seals are sound but the cabinet still sits above 5C, the fault is likely internal: a refrigerant leak, a failing compressor, a stuck expansion valve or a duff fan motor. These need an F-Gas registered engineer, and topping up refrigerant without finding the leak is illegal and a waste of money.
As a rough guide, a callout and diagnosis across South Yorkshire typically runs from around 70 to 120 pounds, with fan motors or thermostats being fairly quick fixes and compressor or gas work costing more. If the unit is old and the repair bill approaches the price of replacement, we will tell you honestly rather than patch it repeatedly.
Chilled display cabinets should hold food at 5C or below, with most set to run between 1C and 4C to allow for door openings. If it is regularly reading above 8C, treat it as a fault and act quickly.
This usually points to blocked airflow or overloading rather than a broken compressor. Clear the rear vents, drop the stock below the load line, and make sure nothing is leaning against the back panel.
In a normal retail setting every three to six months is sensible, but bakeries, chip shops and anywhere greasy or dusty may need it monthly. Regular cleaning is the cheapest way to keep a cabinet cold and bills down.
